John Murray Classes week of May 26 2014

Memorial Day is Monday so no classes.

For Wednesday (Supercharged Painting a.m. and p.m.)

try working from a song or a piece of music that inspires you.

Be narrative and consider the picture in the manner of a lyric or illustration for liner notes or an album package image.

Mine above is distilled from a number of Blues tunes that I love.

It is loosely and directly painted in oil on canvas.

I call it "Treeline Blues".

Don't forget there is still room in my Montserrat College of Art Immersive workshop

in Beverley June 16-20th.

John Murray classes week of May 19, 2014

Next week all classes have a male model...

unusual for my classes, since I generally prefer a female model, but think about how sex and identity effects your drawing and painting.

When I was a child of about 10, I did a painting of a girl flying a kite and my teacher commented on the gender of the figure in my painting.

The truth was I did not think at all about the figure...I was so involved in the representation of flight, wind and the  green/blue hillside that the identity of the figure was irrelevant.

Thank you for attending my lectures on the Art of the Seventies and the Whitney Biennial at the New Art Center over the last three weeks.

Next week let's stay with visions of the figure.
The performance artists who visited us on Wednesday of last week were inspirational in terms of movement and placement.
Try a piece that uses aspects of the human figure in an atonal composition i.e, odd position  and fragmentation.
We will have a model for all classes the following week the 19th.
Also consider my workshop at Montserrat College of Art in June.

John Murray, born in Boston in 1942, has lived in Los Angeles, Provincetown and Boston. For more than 40 years he has explored his bleak/sensual aesthetic through paints and mediums of all descriptions, as well as printmaking and assemblages. He studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Art, Boston, and exhibits widely throughout the North East. jmurrayart.com
This summer, he will be teaching a Summer Immersive course through our Continuing Education Department:
Supercharged Painting
Instructor: John Murray
June 16 – 20 | Mon. – Fri. | 9am – 4pm
This course begins with the notion that Jackson Pollock liberated painting and takes off from there. Students will investigate various painting media including acrylic, glazes, pigments, and collage. Both figurative and abstract approaches are encouraged in this energetic class with an emphasis on Post Modern plasticity and visual language.
